Book Blogger Hop!

"In the spirit of the Twitter Friday Follow, the Book Blogger Hop is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word!  This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books!  It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs to read!"

If you'd like to join the hop, sign up at Crazy For Books.

This week's question:

Why do you read the genre that you do? What draws you to it?

I read a lot of YA fiction, particularly romance (paranormal, historical, contemporary). I think I am drawn to it because the characters tend to be less jaded. I like reading about first love and the intensity of emotions and attraction between the characters that you typically find in YA fiction. There is this kind of innocence or hopefulness to it.  I also love the creativity of story lines that you sometimes find in YA fiction with novels like The Hunger Games or Before I Fall and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. The stories are entertaining but they ask deeper questions at the same time. Somehow I don't think Before I Fall or The Hunger Games would have the same impact if written for adults and featuring adult protagonists. Mostly I think I am drawn to YA fiction because when you are a teenager you are at this place in life where your future stretches out before you with infinite possibilities: it is exciting and scary at the same time and I like remembering that feeling.

Welcome to Reading Extensively where I like to blog about my favorite YA and genre fiction. My name is Christina and I am an adult services/YA librarian from Ohio.

  1. Just hopping through... I so enjoy the wonderful and imaginative worlds that YA authors create! To be able to lose yourself in an innocent and uncomplicated or jaded world for a while during a hectic day in fantastic! and you're right not necessarily something you find in the Adult books.

  4. I love what you said about how the possibilities are infinite for our teenage protagonists - they have enough time to accomplish any dream, and no mistake is too big to make amends for it later.

Thank you for stopping by Book Love! I'm a new follower :)

  8. Agreed! I read YA for all the same reasons. The characters fresh and invigorating perspective, the excitement of reaching adult milestones for the first time, and also, as a great escape from the "real world" (although the best books, I find, get you thinking about your own everyday life in a completely new way.)

I went all over the map with this question on my blog. I read and enjoy almost every genre of fiction out there. There’s no way I could just pick one.

So I talked about all of them. Even romance fiction (sort of)! I invite you to hop over to my blog at http://www.howardsherman.net and see for yourself.

  18. Hopping through. I like YA because it's usually so hopeful and I love how everything is so important, because it's the first time it's happened to the character.
