2011 Hogwarts Reading Challenge

Bunnitaz of Worth Reading It is once again hosting the Hogwarts Reading Challenge! I had a lot of fun with this challenge last year so I knew I had to sign up again.

In the Hogwarts Reading Challenge you are a student of the school. You will be sorted into houses. Each book you read must fit in to the subject of one the classes. You do not have to read books that fit all the subjects. Each book equals one point (toward the house cup).


You must read at least 5 books (audio books counts) before you are entered in the drawing. At the end of the Challenge one person will win a $15 Amazon Gift Card and one house will win the House Cup (purely a pride thing).


Reading one of the 7 Harry Potter books earns you 25 house points. You can only read these books once during the challenge. 15 points for any other Harry Potter related book such as The Tales of Beedle the Bard or A Parent's Guide to Harry Potter, again these books can only be read once during the challenge.

For this mini challenge the goal is to read 3 books that are related to hide and seek. These books can be mysteries, detective stories, crime, or have the words hide or seek in the title.

Points - 10 per book for the first three books and 25 points for completing the challenge. After the first three books, you get 15 extra points for each additional book you read for the mini challenge. Every third book equals one extra entry in the Triwizard Tournament Drawing.

2011 Colorful Chick Lit Challenge

January 1-December 31, 2011

Reads4Pleasure is hosting the Colorful Chick Lit Challenge. I found out about this fun challenge from Ari at Reading in Color. I know that I am once again going overboard on the reading challenges but this one will fit nicely with the POC Reading Challenge so I decided to take the plunge and sign up. 

The goal of the challenge is to read chick lit written by women of color about women of color and to try to read a variety of POC chick lit (Indian, Asian, Latina, African American).

There are three levels to the challenge:

Novice-4 to 7 books

Amateur-8 to 11 books

Queen of Chick Lit-12 or more books

I am going to aim for the novice level to start with and see how I do from there.  I don't have my book list yet but I will hopefully find some great titles to read soon.

2011 Take a Chance Challenge

January 1-December 31, 2011

Life With Books is hosting the third Take a Chance Challenge. This unique reading challenge is all about how we choose what books we read. By participating in this challenge, I am sure to find some great books that I would otherwise have missed out on.


There are ten different "challenges" or ways in which we can select what we read:


1: Staff Member’s Choice: Go to a bookstore or library that has a “Staff Picks” section. Read one of the picks from that section.


2: Loved One’s Choice: Ask a loved one to pick a book for you to read. (If you can convince them to buy it for you, that is even better!)


3: Blogger’s Choice: Find a “Best Books Read” post from a favorite blogger. Read a book from their list.


4: Critic’s Choice: Find a “Best of the Year” list from a magazine, newspaper or professional critic. Read a book from their Top 10 list.


5: Blurb Book: Find a book that has a blurb on it from another author. Read a book by the author that wrote the blurb.


6: Book Seer Pick: Go to The Book Seer and follow the instructions there. Read a book from the list it generates for you.


7: What Should I Read Next Pick : Go to What Should I Read Next and follow the instructions there. Read a book from the list it generates for you.


8: Which Book Pick: Go to Which Book and use the software to generate a list of books. Read a book from that list.


9: LibraryThing Pick: Go to LibraryThing’s Zeitgeist page. Look at the lists for 25 Most Reviewed Books or Top Books and pick a book you’ve never read. Read the book. (Yes … you can click on MORE if you have to.)


10: Pick A Method: Pick a method for finding a book from the choices listed below (used in previous versions of the challenge).


•Random Book Selection. Go to the library. Position yourself in a section such as Fiction, Non-Fiction, Mystery, Children (whatever section you want). Then write down random directions for yourself (for example, third row, second shelf, fifth book from right). Follow your directions and see what book you find. Check that book out of the library, read it and then write about it. (If you prefer, you can do the same at a bookstore and buy the book!)
•Public Spying. Find someone who is reading a book in public. Find out what book they are reading and then read the same book. Write about it.
•Random Bestseller. Go to Random.org and, using the True Random Number Generator, enter the number 1950 for the min. and 2010 for the max. and then hit generate. Then go to this site and find the year that Random.org generated for you and click on it. Then find the bestseller list for the week that would contain your birthday for that year. Choose one of the bestsellers from the list that comes up, read it and write about it.

2011 Outlander Series Reading Challenge

January 1-December 31, 2011

I know that I made a resolution to try to keep my reading challenge participation to no more than 20 but when I saw this challenge I just couldn't resist! The Lit Bitch is hosting the Outlander Series Reading Challenge to encourage people to read Diana Gabaldon's series about time travel and Scottish history.


The goal is to read all of the books currently published:


Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums in Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone


I loved Outlander but sadly haven't finished the rest of the series. I tried to read Dragonfly in Amber a couple of years ago but couldn't get into it. I plan to reread Outlander and hopefully this time I will be able to finish Dragonfly in Amber. I may also read The Exile (graphic novel that is a companion of sorts to Outlander).

2011 Young Adult Contemporary Reading Challenge

Reggie at The Undercover Book Lover is hosting the YA Contemporary Challenge to encourage us to read more YA contemporary novels. The goal of the challenge is to read 13 YA contemporary novels in 2011. The novels also must be published in 2011. As someone who reads a lot of YA paranormal fiction I think it would be good for me to balance it out by doing this challenge.

2011 Mystery and Suspense Challenge

 

Book Chick City is once again hosting the Mystery & Suspense Reading Challenge. I did not participate last year but thought I'd join this time because I want to read more mystery and suspense fiction. One of my job responsibilities as an adult services librarian is to order fiction for adults and I realized that I am deficient in the mystery department so I often miss out ordering books that mystery readers would like to see on the shelves. Hopefully this challenge will help me become more familiar with the genre. I might even convince myself to try reading some "cozy" mysteries.

2011 Victorian Literature Challenge

 January 1-December 31, 2011 

The Victorian Literature Challenge is being hosted by Bethany at Words, Words, Words. The purpose of the reading challenge is to read literature written from 1837-1901.

There are four levels to this challenge:

Sense and Sensibility-read 1 to 4 books

Great Expectations-read 5 to 9 books

Hard Times-read 10 to 14 books

Desperate Remedies-read 15+ books

I am going to aim for the Sense and Sensibility level because I know that I won't likely read 5 or more Victorian novels.

2011 Southern Literature Challenge

Jen at the Introverted Reader is hosting the Southern Literature Challenge to pay homage to her heritage. I haven't read a lot of Southern Literature but I have enjoyed what I've tried so I thought I'd sign up for this challenge.

The object is to read at least one book by an author from the South that is set mostly in the South.

 

There are four levels to this challenge:

Level 1-C'mon in the house! Read 1 book

Level 2-Pull up a seat and stay a while! Read 2 books
Level 3-Have a glass of sweet iced tea, honey. Read 3 books
Level 4-Y'all come back now, y'hear! Read 4 books

I am going to aim for Level 2 for now and see how I do with it.

2011 Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge

Jamie at The Book Junkie's Bookshelf is hosting a Support Your Local Library Challenge. As a librarian and library patron I love the idea behind this challenge! 

There are four levels to this challenge:

Mini-read 30 books checked out from the library
Fun size-read 40 books checked out from the library
Jumbo size-read 50 books checked out from the library
Mega size-read51+ books checked out from the library

I am going to aim for the Mega size. It shouldn't be too hard for me since I work in a library and I'm constantly checking out more books than I can possibly read in a month!

2011 POC Reading Challenge

I have once again decided to participate in the POC Reading Challenge. This fantastic challenge encourages participants to read books written by persons of color or featuring characters that are persons of color.

There are 5 levels to this challenge:

Level 1-read 1 to 3 POC books

Level 2-read 4 to 6 POC books

Level 3-read 7 to 9 POC books

Level 4-read 10 to 15 POC books

Level 5-read 16 to 25 POC books

Last year I read 25 POC books. This year I hope to at least reach level 4 and read 10 to 15 POC books.

2011 Anne McCaffrey Reading Challenge

I've been wanting to read Anne McCaffrey for years now. People keep telling me how fantastic the Harper Hall and Dragonriders of Pern series are. So when I found out that Caroline at Portrait of a Woman is hosting an Anne McCaffrey Reading Challenge I decided to sign up!

My goal for this challenge is to read the three books that comprise the Harper Hall Trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums) and then if I decide I want to keep reading more of McCaffrey's work I will go on to the Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon). I plan to read Dragonsong during the first quarter and then read Dragonsinger and Dragondrums in the second quarter.

2011 South Asian Author Challenge

January 1-December 31, 2010

Swapna of S. Krishna's Books is once again hosting the South Asian Author Challenge. I participated in this challenge last year but to my disappointment I was unable to finish. As a South Asian American I think this challenge is very important and I hope to do much better this year!

The books read for this challenge must either be written by a South Asian author (from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, or the Maldives) or the book must be about South Asia in some way (set in a South Asian country or about South Asians living abroad). Memoirs, cookbooks, travel guides, etc. also count.

There are six levels to this challenge:

•South Asian Encounter - 1 book
•South Asian Wanderer - 3 books
•South Asian Explorer - 5 books
•South Asian Adventurer - 7 books
•South Asian Hero/Heroine - 10 books

I am once again participating in this challenge although I did not finish it last year. This year the challenge is being hosted by My Love Affair With Books.

2011 Historical Fiction Challenge

This year the Historical Fiction Challenge is being hosted by Historical Tapestry.

The challenge will run from January 1-December 31, 2011. Each month there will be a different post to link your reviews.

There are five levels to choose from:

1. Severe Bookaholism: 20 books

2. Undoubtedly Obsessed: 15 books

3. Struggling the Addiction: 10 books

4. Daring and Curious: 5 books

2011 Page to Screen Reading Challenge

After all the fun I had with participating in reading challenges, I have decided to host my own for 2011! I love watching movies that are based on books and I've even decided to read books after seeing movie trailers that looked promising like The Lord of the Rings and Atonement.

I decided to hold The Page to Screen Reading Challenge to encourage people to read books and watch movies that are based on books.  

Prizes:

• One participant will win their choice of book worth up to $15 from Amazon.com or The Book Depository (for international participants in countries that Book Depository ships to). 
• Participants must reach reading level one (5 books) by December 31, 2011  to be entered in the drawing.
• Reviews are not required but each review you post will give you an extra entry. So be sure to link your reviews!

Rules:

• Read books that were made into movies or T.V. shows
• Books must be read between January 1-December 31, 2011
• Rereads count!
• You can also watch the movies/T.V. shows as part of the challenge but it is not a requirement
• If you watch T.V. shows, you should watch 2 hours of the show to be equal to one movie
• Books that are currently being made into movies also count as long as the movie will be released sometime in 2011
• Make a post about the challenge using my challenge logo and link your post below to sign up

Jennifer at Reading With Tequila is hosting the fun and creative Book Blogger Recommendation Challenge. The challenge runs from January 1-December 31, 2011 and the purpose is to read books recommended by book bloggers. There is a master list of over 400 books to choose from and 5 different reading levels.

2011 YA Romance Reading Challenge

2011 100+ Reading Challenge

Amy at My Overstuffed Bookshelf is hosting the 100+ Reading Challenge.  

Rules:

• The goal is to read 100 or more books.
• Anyone can join.
• You don't need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.
• Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.
• What doesn't count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible.
• No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.
• Crossovers from other reading challenges count.
• Books started before the January 1st do not count.
• You can join at anytime.

2011 YA Reading Challenge

The 2011 YA Reading Challenge is being hosted by Jami at For The Love of YA. This is such a fun challenge for me since I love YA fiction. 

There are four levels to the challenge:

The Mini YA Reading Challenge – Read 12 Young Adult novels

The "Fun Size" YA Reading Challenge – Read 20 Young Adult novels

The Jumbo Size YA Reading Challenge – Read 40 Young Adult novels

The Mega size YA Reading Challenge – Read 50+ Young Adult novels

I am aiming for the Mega size because I read so many YA books. Hopefully although I will have less time to read next year I will still make my goal!
