Book Beginnings on Friday (1)

Book Beginnings on Friday is a new meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.

I just finished a book but have yet to start reading another one so I am going to share the first sentence from the book I just finished and the first sentence from a book I am thinking of reading next!

All Unquiet Things by Anna Jarzab

It was the end of summer, when the hills were bone dry and brown; the sun beating down and shimmering up off the pavement was enough to give you heatstroke.

I love this sentence because it perfectly portrays Neily's narrative voice and how he feels about living in Empire Valley. I thought this was a fantastic book. I will hopefully have a review up soon!

The Courteous Cad by Catherine Palmer

"I shall never marry," Prudence Watson declared to her sister as they crossed a busy Yorkshire street.

I actually rolled my eyes when I read this sentence because of course since this is a romance novel I know that Prudence will be getting married at the end of the book, or at the very least engaged. If not, I would be very surprised.

What is the first sentence of the book you are currently reading?

  1. Great opening sentences. I'l add All Unquiet Things on my tbr pile & I'll probably list it as one of my Friday Finds. I'm glad you loved it & from the summary seems that I'd like it a lot, too. Here are mine: http://my-book-obsession.blogspot.com/2010/03/book-beginnings-on-friday-1.html

  3. I agree with you. The latter one is a little bit trite, but the first one sounds very intruiging.

  4. Great first sentences - both very different from the other. Let us all know if Prudence gets married. :)

  5. I finished the Courteous Cad last night and of course Prudence does marry the now reformed cad of the title. I had to push myself to keep reading the book at times but there were some enjoyable things like information about what working in a worsted mill would be like and child labor concerns.
