It's Monday, What Are You Reading (127)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

I had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed spending time with my parents especially. It is always fun for my mom and I to work together on the Thanksgiving meal though it is funny how we put so much time and effort into preparing the meal and then it seems to be devoured in a matter of seconds :)

I only had time to finish one book but this week I will have to redouble my efforts with my book group meeting coming up on Tuesday. I still have to finish the book for the evening discussion group but at least I finished the book for the afternoon group already (Zeitoun).

Books read:

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (reread)

I am glad that I decided to reread this book. I think I judged it unfairly the first time I read it since I'd just finished The Lord of the Rings. This book is not as good as The Lord of the Rings but I liked it anyway and definitely gained a greater appreciation for it the second time around.

Currently reading:

Matched by Ally Condie (reread)

I loved Matched when I first read it and I am enjoying this rereading. I liked the world building and learning about the Society.

Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult

Sometimes we have to read books we don't want to read. Just like being forced to eat vegetables when we were kids. This is one of those books for me. I thought I'd love it (I'm glad it was a Kindle deal when I bought it) but I find the characters to be really annoying. Oh well. Hopefully we will have a spirited book discussion about it on Tuesday. Sometimes it is more fun to talk about why we hated a book or why it didn't work for us than it is to talk about a book that was universally loved.

What I plan to read next:

Crossed by Ally Condie (reread)

I liked Crossed but didn't think it was as good as Matched. Maybe I will feel differently when I reread it.

Reached by Ally Condie

I can't wait to see how this series ends. I have high hopes based on the positive reviews I've read.

The Fire Chronicle by John Stephens

I know that unless I have my own little readathon I won't get to this book yet but it is coming up on my reading list soon. The first book was a fun MG fantasy novel that I wasn't expecting to like as much as I did.

  1. I enjoyed The Hobbit way more than The Lord of the Rings back in high school. I actually never even finished the complete trilogy. I couldn't take anymore mud! I don't even remember how far I got. I keep saying that I should attempt it again sometime, but in reality, I just don't see it happening. I love the movies though! Enjoy your week!

  3. Jodi Picoult depresses me somewhat and I have now stopped reading her books. I find I keep thinking of the characters for days and it is upsetting. Enjoy your week.

  5. I enjoyed The Hobbit way more than LOTR when I read the former in seventh grade-I couldn't stand Tom Bombadil and abandoned the series early on. Then I fell in love with Orlando Bloom and he is actually what inspired me to go back and give the trilogy another chance. I think though that I should really give The Hobbit another read as adult Stephanie is a very different reader from 12-year old Stephanie and would probably get some very different things out of The Hobbit.

  6. John Stephens stopped by our store once and he was so nice. I'll read his books just for that reason alone but it's nice to have confirmation that it's a good read.

  8. Glad to hear your Thanksgiving was lovely, it's like that at Christmas time too, hours and hours of cooking disappears in minutes lol.
I'm pleased you enjoyed the re-read of The Hobbitt, I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm pretty sure it's not out here until Feb 2013, so I'll have time for a re-read too. Had a giggle at your thoughts on Keeping Faith, I agree sometimes it's loads of fun to talk about hating a book ;)

Have a great week and happy reading :)

  9. I read the Hobbit when I was in 9th grade but I didn't really like it because I got lost. I'm planning on picking it up again now that I'm older.

  12. I totally understand about cooking and cooking that meal only to see it gobbled up in minutes, lol.

  15. I recently reread the Hobbit as well, it had been at least a decade since I picked it up. I agree that it's not as good as LOTR, but I look at it from the perspective that it was written as a childrens book, and also that it's the introduction to Middle Earth. I love that Gloin is not a huge character in The Hobbit, but that Gimli is his son and is a big part of LOTR. That the first time you read The Hobbit, assuming you haven't read or seen LOTR, you don't know the significance of Bilbo finding the ring...he just finds a magic ring! It's all magical to me, and I love the world that Tolkien created :)
