After the events of The Iron King, Meghan and Prince Ash are on their way to the Unseelie Court when a new threat emerges in the form of a predatory wolf. This novella takes place in between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter. I liked The Iron King even though there were some flaws and Meghan could be really annoying at times. With The Iron King, the action and the characters of Grimalkin and Puck increased my enjoyment of the book. In Winter's Passage, Grimalkin is there but unfortunately his presence is not enough to make the story entertaining. I felt that there was not enough substance to the plot and no character development at all. Of course since this is a novella there isn't a lot of room for character development. What really disappointed me is that nothing major happens and the ending was a letdown after the big buildup. For those who love the romance between Meghan and Ash, there are some nice romantic moments between them. If you are a diehard fan of The Iron King, then you will probably still enjoy Winter's Passage at least for the romance. I was just a little disappointed that there wasn't a bit more to this novella. Winter's Passage is available as a free download until July 31st at the Iron Fey website. The Iron Daughter will be released on August 1, 2010.
Lovely review! I agree with you - it's hard to have good character development in a novella. At least, that's what I've experienced so far.
