It's Monday, What Are You Reading (101)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

After an incredibly stressful week, I was relieved to make it to the weekend! I only finished one book last week (First Lady) and the rest of the books on my list are from the time I was on blogging hiatus while I worked on my presentation for work. Thankfully it went really well and this week should be much quieter.

Books read:

I had fun rereading these books before reading the new book in the Gallagher Girls series. It was nice to realize that even though I knew what happened, the books were still enjoyable. I'd actually forgotten some things too.

This is definitely a darker book in the series and it shed some light on various secrets. It was also frustrating to read at first, kind of like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was.

Little Princes by Conor Grennan

This was an amazing book and I'm so glad I listened to the audio version! I will have my review up later this week.

Home Front by Kristin Hannah

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I'd tried one other book by her last year but couldn't get into it (Between Sisters). I may have to check out some other Kristin Hannah books sometime. It kind of reminded me of Jodi Picoult.

First Lady by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

This was a fun diversion though I rolled my eyes through parts of it at the end. The writing style reminded me of Jennifer Crusie when it was good.

Books reviewed:

Ripper by Amy Carol Reeves

Currently reading:

Slide by Jill Hathaway

Timeless by Gail Carriger

Some of the books I might read:

This Saturday, I will be participating in the Dewey Readathon and I hope to make a dent in my ever expanding TBR pile.

The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley

Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins

The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings

I just saw the movie and it was really good though I thought some of the language was gratuitous. The acting was superb, especially by George Clooney.

One For the Money by Janet Evanovich

I want to read this before I watch the movie next month when it is released on DVD. Though the movie got bad reviews, the book looks really funny and exactly what I'm in the mood for.

  1. Looks like you had a nice week.
Oh - you started Timeless! I need to get that next week with my Audible credits! I like SEP for light reading even though she does get eye rolls sometimes. :-)
    Happy reading!

    1. I enjoy listening to this series on audio too though I've only got the first two books. I did find First Lady to be a good book for light reading even with its flaws.

  2. Nice assortment! I have decided to wait a while before reading another Stephanie Plum story as they were starting to all seem alike to me. I loved Timeless when I read it. I also have a few Gallagher
Girls mysteries on my Kindle. I have only read the first though. Have a great week!

    1. My sister thought the Stephanie Plum books were all too similar after awhile too but I at least want to give book one a try.

Glad to know you loved Timeless. I am a fan of Carriger's books and can't wait for her YA series. With the Gallagher Girls series, the books do start to get better after the first one which I found to be a little too light and almost more for younger readers rather than teens. I hope you'll someday give the other books a try.

  3. Glad to heard your presentation went well! I can't wait to read Slide, I think that will be very good. I really enjoyed Spellbound and have recently been thinking about reading a Janet Evanovich book to see what all the hype is about. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I look forward to your review of the Home Front audio book. I may have to try some of Kristin Hannah's other books too. Glad you loved Little Princes also. I wasn't sure I'd like the audio book but it didn't take me long to really enjoy that book in that format.

  6. I just looked up the plot of First Lady...and rolled my eyes-it sounds kind of ridiculous but potentially enjoyable. I've never read any Crusie but I've heard good things about her writing so the book might actually be good. Looking forward to your review for more information.

    1. I actually liked the one book by Jennifer Crusie that I've read (Bet Me) more than this one by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I definitely want to try more of Crusie's books.

The plot for First Lady is definitely ridiculous and you have to suspend disbelief but I am used to doing that with books like the Becky Bloomwood series. What had me rolling my eyes was how neatly everything wrapped up and the super cheesy declaration of love from the hero. This is the kind of book I like to pick up when I am stressed though. Either humorous romance or chick lit that makes me laugh.

My favorite read this week was Sapphique by Catherine Fisher. Please come see what else I'm reading.

  9. Little Princes caught my eye as did The Orchid House, probably because of the lovely cover lol. I read and reviewed Slide a couple of weeks ago ... entertaining. and I have a couple of Kristin Hannah books on my kindle, not sure which ones but I'm yet to read anything by this author. Fingers crossed it's Home Front.

Have a great week and happy reading :)

    1. I do like the cover of The Orchid House. I think there have been comparisons to Downton Abbey as well but that seems to be the thing to do lately with books to get them to sell...

I NEED to get my hands on that book! I'm hoping the boyfriend will get it for me for my birthday...but he's a tad clueless so that may be a lost cause..Happy Reading!

  16. Thanks for recommending Little Princes! It was actually on my wishlist at the library. I still need to read Heartless. I tend to stay one book behind in a series so I don't have to wait for the next one to be released. I think you'll like One for the Money. You can't help but love Stephanie Plum. I'm not a huge fan of Katherine Heigl so I've skipped the movie though. Enjoy your week!
