Sunday Post (82) / It's Monday, WAYR

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme now hosted by Kathryn at Book Date, where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

Just when it seemed like spring weather was going to stick around for awhile we are back to winter. Thursday night we got a couple inches of snow and this Monday we are supposed to get 1-3 inches. Thankfully the roads are good and it does look pretty but that wind is so cold. Last Wednesday evening there were some power outages in the town where I work due to wind damage. Both the local Walmart and grocery store didn't have power but operated on a generator (though both stores lost all their produce, frozen and refrigerated products) and several other businesses including fast food chains were closed the next day.  The library lost power after hours on Wednesday night but we had power on Thursday though it did affect some of our technology.

On Friday I attended a programming meeting with librarians from other libraries. I got a few good ideas including a lead on a Star Wars author (nonfiction) for our Comic Con this summer. I hope that will pan out.

Saturday was supposed to be my first swimming lesson but it was cancelled due to a swim meet. Unfortunately the Y neglected to inform me. I only found out because I called them on Friday evening to confirm the start time of the class. I was not happy but thankfully I didn't pay for the classes yet. They were supposed to call me back to let me know if there would be a makeup class but they didn't. I am not happy with their level of professionalism and we'll see if there is a class next Saturday. The silver lining is that I have been struggling with sinus issues again so maybe it is a good thing to not try swimming right now!

This Friday the library is holding an Irish music concert at our local coffee shop. Hopefully we'll have decent attendance though I found out recently that the town is having a St. Patrick's Day themed pub crawl on the same night.

Last week on my blog:

Close Enough to Touch by Colleen Oakley (review)

Books read:

A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn

I ended up liking this one more than the first book. I liked the character development and the mystery wasn't as easy for me to solve.

The Girl in the Castle by Santa Montefiore

I originally started out listening to the audio book version of this novel but ended up returning it as I felt like I was missing too much of the story while driving. It was the perfect book to read before St. Patrick's Day. I learned more about Irish history during the early 20th century and some of the events were a little familiar to me because of Branson on Downton Abbey. I'm eagerly anticipating the second book. I have to admit that Bridie annoyed me though.

Currently reading:

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

I am looking forward to watching the new Beauty and the Beast but while I wait, I am enjoying this retelling. I like that it includes Russian folklore.

On my TBR pile:

Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens

I started reading this before deciding to pick up Hunted first instead. I liked what I read though I usually don't go for thrillers. My coworkers are huge fans of Chevy Stevens though I don't think I will be.

The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff

I have heard a lot of good things about this book and hopefully I will like it though I know it will be tough subject matter like The Nightingale

The Tumbling Turner Sisters by Juliette Fay

This is my evening book group's selection for March. I am really looking forward to it. A couple of our members have already read it and loved it.

A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen

My afternoon book group is reading this for our March book. I really liked the movie (and the real Bob was in it as himself--isn't he cute?) so I'm curious to see how faithful it was to the book.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I've had this checked out from the library for months and I can't renew it so if I'm going to read it, I have to get to it soon.

New books received:

Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett (for review)

It Happens All the Time by Amy Hatvany (for review)

A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen (library book)

Starfall by Melissa Landers (library book)

Always by Sarah Jio (library book)

  1. I'm so glad you liked Girl in the Castle. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for book two as well. I definitely thought of Branson as I was reading it and yes, Birdie is SO annoying at times. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Alex, Approximately. I love the sound of that book as well as The Orphan's Tale. I hope you have a great week and I am in complete denial about the snow. We are supposed to get a good amount. Some reports say up to a foot. UGH! My flowers just started popping up too. :( I'm ready for spring. Have a great week!

  2. It is hard to imagine snow so late in the season. Especially after having nicer weather. It must be very disappointing.

If you enjoyed The Nightingale, you should love The Orphan's Tale.

I really enjoyed It Happens All the Time...and Always.

Never Let You Go was another favorite, but I am a big fan of thrillers.

I am curious about The Tumbling Turner Sisters.

The Irish music concert sounds wonderful. When my eldest son was visiting, we heard weekly Irish music at a pub near here, which made him fondly recall his months living in Ireland back in the 90s.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog. Happy reading!

Glad to see that you have lots of great books to read. I hope you enjoy them.
I'm curious about Never Let You Go. Looking forward to reading what you think about it. :)

  5. The weather is being so weird, right? All the sudden this week it's supposed to get colder here than it got all winter! It's spring, it should be getting warmer! Sorry about those power outages though :-/ And that's definitely sounds aggravating how the Y isn't informing you of anything. But hopefully the swim class will go well once you do finally get to go to it! And have fun at the Irish music concert!

  6. Wow St. Patrick's Day IS coming up isn't it? Slow down March! lol good luck with your event. Sorry to hear about the outages! We had that nasty wind too and I know people who were affected but luckily I didn't lose power. And snow! We haven't got any of that- seems like this year your weather has been worse than ours even though we're a little farther north!

The Raybourn books are on my radar since I see them keep popping up and they seem to be getting good marks. Alex, Appromximately looks good and I just started Starfall.

  7. Sorry to hear about the poor weather your way. I hope that it impproves soon. Sounds like you had a busy week though.

Great to see some familiar books on your shelves. I enjoyed The Girl in the Castle. I'm keen to read the new Colleen Oakley offering. I purchased a copy of The Orphan's Tale as soon as it was released here, I love her work. Chevy Stevens new one also looks great! Enjoy your fantastic book haul this week!

  8. Wind can be so damaging, I hate it of all weather types. You have some great books in your line up. I liked The Orphan's Tale a lot, perhaps liked The Nightingale a little more but both very good.

  9. Good luck with your swimming lesson, so many places really couldn't care less about their customers these days!

Hope this week is better and the power stays on.

  10. I haven't seen the film yet about Bob the cat, but I loved the book. He is more faithful than a dog. Sorry about the power outages, that is always such a pain. We are expecting a foot of snow tomorrow, at least it is late in the season so it will melt quickly.

  14. I never read Chevy Stevens. I use to think Chevy was a male author until someone pointed out to me that the author is a female. Oops! I haven't read anything by the author but I'm willing to give it a shot. One of my avid readers loved Stalking Jack the Ripper and suggested that I pick it up. So far, I've only read so-so reviews for it. I'll be curious to read your thoughts when you do get to it.

  15. That wind blew through here too, and caused so much havoc!

The Irish music night sounds fun! I was just thinking how I would be interested this year in attending a non-drinking version of St. Patrick's Day, if I could find one. Hunted looks really good!

  16. I loved A Perilous Undertaking. Veronica is such a fabulous character for her time period, overstepping all of the boundries. I can't wait for the next installment. I've seen Stalking Jack the Ripper a few times and it does look interesting. I just haven't had a chance to look more closely. Enjoy your reading!

  17. What an absolutely stunning collection of books.
You seem to be having mixed weather but I do wish someone could send some of it here. I will do anything for good rains, good cold weather. Its stifling here.

  18. This crazy weather! It was in the 70s a week ago, and now I'm off for a snow day for the second day in a row. I'm reading and enjoying Alex, Approximately right now. Happy reading!
