Sunday Post (27) / It's Monday, What Are You Reading

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme now hosted by Kathryn at Book Date, where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

I'm sad that October is over and November is here although I love Thanksgiving. It is one of my favorite holidays. I just wish the year wasn't nearly over! I'm also starting to worry about winter even though I am hopeful we won't see snow till next month. We do make a contest out of guessing the first snowfall of the year at work. I haven't won yet but maybe this will be the year!

At the murder mystery dinner with our special guest, John Wayne

This past Monday was our Wild West murder mystery dinner at our branch library. We had 32 people, the food was excellent and everyone had a good time. This is the first program for adults we've done at the branch in years so we are very happy about the response. Now I just need to focus on coming up with a craft for our holiday open house in two weekends. This will be our second annual holiday open house but this year we are doing more than craft demonstrations and story times for the kids. We have turkey bowling in the library parking lot (a frozen turkey--one patron was alarmed that we were going to be throwing a live bird...) and live reindeer along with a visit from Santa (our library director). I'm excited about the reindeer and the turkey bowling sounds like fun though I won't be participating. I will be sure to post pictures!

This coming Sunday my sister and I will be taking our mom to see the Moscow Ballet perform The Nutcracker. My mom loves The Nutcracker but she has never seen the ballet so this will be a treat!

Last week on my blog:

Avelynn by Marissa Campbell (review)

Books read:

First & Then by Emma Mills

I liked this contemporary novel that pays homage to Jane Austen. It wasn't a retelling by any means but I enjoyed it anyway.

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

This novel was mostly good. I liked the unusual setting of the insane asylum and trying to figure out who the killer is and I felt sorry for the protagonist. There was a strange twist towards the end of the book that I didn't quite like.

Currently reading:

These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly

I really like this one so far. The main character is a little naive but that is understandable given how sheltered her life has been.

What I might read next:

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

The Good Neighbor by Amy Sue Nathan

Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal

Mrs. Roosevelt's Confidante by Susan Elia MacNeal

Death Wears a Mask by Ashley Weaver

New books received:

How to Be Brave by E. Katherine Kottaras (for review)

See Me by Nicholas Sparks (library book)

  2. Thank you...I enjoyed These Shallow Graves and everyone is saying how her nativity annoyed them..but it was so realistic given her upbring!

  3. Nice picture with the Duke ha ha! That western theme mystery sounds so cool, you guys do some neat things in your library system. And turkey bowling- too funny!

I miss October too, November just seems so bleak although Thanksgiving is a bright spot. I didn't care about Thanksgiving as a kid but as an adult I appreciate it now- and the food doesn't hurt. :)

    Hope your week is great!

  13. Anytime I see the words Farm Boy, I can't help but think of Princess Bride!

It sounds like you have a lot of great activities lined up for November ~ I am partial to the month, it's my birthday month. :) Lol.

I am interested in your thoughts on Kitchens of the Great Midwest - I had mixed feelings about it. These Shallow Graves just came in for me at the library, it might end up being the book I read this week! :)
