It's Monday, What Are You Reading (189)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading is a fun weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey where we share what we've read and reviewed over the past week and what we plan to read next.

I can't believe that summer is pretty much over. It makes me kind of sad but I've decided that I am going to enjoy this fall instead of worrying about impending snow and ice. Things I like about fall: apple cider, Halloween, Thanksgiving, holiday library programs, and the upcoming fall books I am excited for like The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan. Oh and an excuse to eat pumpkin pie...

Books read:

A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin

I loved this book and even though I'd already watched season two of the show, I enjoyed reading from the various character viewpoints and seeing the differences between the book and the show, most memorably the House of the Undying in Qarth and all the foreshadowing of events that will be taking place in the next book.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

I liked this one even more than The Husband's Secret. It was a page turner and it had a little bit of a mystery too. I liked how there were snippets of the investigation to build suspense between the chapters so you knew something big was coming.

Island of a Thousand Mirrors by Nayomi Munaweera

I thought reading Big Little Lies was an emotional experience until I picked up this book. It is set in Sri Lanka and the United States and examines the war from the perspective of two families on opposite sides.

What I plan to read next:

I have no idea. Maybe something lighthearted and predictable...

  1. Oh, I'm really keen to read Big Little Lies - everyone seems to be talking about it!

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Oh wow, better than The Husband's Secret!! I wish I was reading it this week but I've got too many review books :(
I'll add Island of a Thousand Secrets to my groaning wish list lol. Enjoy all that fall has to offer, I'm looking forward to beautiful spring weather. Have a great week & happy reading!

  3. Autumn has its advantages - had forgotten that the new Rick Riordan book will be out. I've read the others, so will have to read The Blood of Olympus. I want to read Big Little Lies as well. Have a great week.

  4. I like Fall too - but ours must be shorter. It isn't too unusual to have our first snowfall around Halloween. Happy reading!

  5. I love fall! But you are right, I don't like to think about what comes next, winter!

  6. I'm excited about fall too even though I'm bummed summer is over. :) I like your list- cider, Thanksgiving- yeah all good stuff. I'm a big fan of October in general...

A Clash of Kings is so good. I enjoy the character depth too, and yes the Qarth stuff is so interesting. I think it all flew over my head the first time, then when I re- read it I was like, oh he's foreshadowing this and that! I think Dany's story really takes off from there...

  7. I've been blog hopping a storm today, and a lot of people are reading Big Little Lies, seems like its all around, I think I may have to try it out!

  8. Big Little Lies is a fab read :)

    Have a great week

  9. Good to know Big Little Lies is even better than The Husband's Secret. I have it but haven't gotten to it yet.

Island of A Thousand Mirrors sounds intense but good.

ENJOY your upcoming week...I am sure you will find something light and predictable to read.

  10. You sound exactly like me. :) I am trying really, really hard this year to be positive about the seasons changing, but like you, I am SO not looking forward to snow and ice. However, pumpkin pie does sound good right about now. :) I will keep my eye out for your review of Big Little Lies…definitely intrigued by that one. I hope you had a great holiday weekend!

  11. I need to catch up with Martin's books! I've only read the first one so far.

SO looking forward to pumpkin pie!

Hope you enjoy whatever you read next :)

  12. All 3 of those are on my to-read list!
